We're talking cold here...

We had a high here at the ranch of 34 degrees, we've got icicles here!

Took a little drive this morning...

Nothing more fun than riding through the country after a snow... But no fun splashing through a stream with no doors or top! The water froze instantly to the windshield.. And myself!

Winter weather...

Getting a nice dusting of snow here at the ranch, earlier we had a couple of inches on the ground, now since that has mostly soaked in, its starting to snow some more, add the wind and it looks very wintry outside. Current conditions are 30 degrees with a wind-chill of 12!

Our day...

Well, just a bit of work in the morning, cut down three trees, and chop them up for firewood for the next couple of cold nights (pssst looks like we're gonna see some snow in the next couple of days)
While scouting for wood, I discovered something that I never knew, the valley across our road at one time had some kind of line stretched through it. Its been cut down, only sign was a few galvanized bolts and a part of a glass insulator. I'll have to hike it and see if I find anything more.
So after that discovery, we decided to load up our visitors in the Samurai, and go look and try to make another new discovery... And we did! We found some Indian Hieroglyphics not far from the house... Pretty cool.

Never know what you'll see on the way home...

This afternoon the little one and I saw a huge Javelina (wild pig) running along the road. We stopped to get a nice up and close look at it, when we noticed that there was a tiny little fur ball running after it... That's when we realized that it was a baby Javelina! We tried to get a pic, but by the time we got the camera out and took a snap shot, they were so far away that I'm not sure if you can see them... If you can let me know! The adult is in the background, towards the left, the baby in the foreground right at the base of the tree.

What is this bright thing in the sky?

Today is Christmas Eve, and it is a beautiful morning! We've had rain for the past week, more rain than we are used too. I am happy to report that the batteries made it through not only the shortest days of the year, but also the shortest days, with clouds and rain, and we never had to start a generator! (we did cheat and use oil lamps for light at night!)
Well since the sun is shining I decided to take a quick pic of the new window in all it glory. The sun is shining nicely through it, and although it has Low E 286, I can really feel the solar heat gain... Good for the winter, not so good for the summer. So I think another solar screen is in the future before the temperature really starts to rise...

So off to enjoy some EggNog, some wine, and little ones face when she opens her presents!

Been raining for a long time...

It's been a year since we've seen rain like this. We are going on twelve hours of continuous
rain here at the ranch. The most amazing part is this is the third day we've had rain. I'm not complaining we need it, and so far I haven't seen any leaks. Which really makes me happy! It does make working a bit more difficult. Glad I have things to do inside now...

What a day...

Woke up to a winter wonderland... Well not really, but there was frost everywhere. So once the wood stoves were blazing and we had enough heat to move we started work on the kitchen part of the saloon. Had the insulated box for the fridge inserted into the wall... Nice. Also have our custom made sink base in place. (since we are all so tall we raised the height up to 42" on the countertops... No bending at the waist to do dishes!)

Next on the agenda, we replaced a window in the living room, from a 2x3 to a 4x5! Looks like patio door! Very nice...

Too dark for pics right now, so I guess I better settle for a cold beer...
