Missing hiker found dead near Sierra Nevada lake

Missing hiker found dead off popular Sierra Nevada trail

A hiker who went missing Saturday on the popular Sierra Buttes trail was found dead the following day, the Sierra County sheriff's office said.

The man had been reported lost Saturday afternoon by his brother, with whom he had hiked to the Sierra Buttes lookout that morning. The two had taken different routes back to the car. When the one did not show up, the other went back to look for him but had no success.

The search started that afternoon and involved multiple agencies, using snowmobiles, a helicopter and a fixed-wing aircraft.

On Sunday afternoon, searchers saw the body above Young America Lake, and it was recovered by a team in a California Highway Patrol helicopter.

The man had apparently died from injuries suffered when he fell from the ridge that overlooks the lake.

The Sierra Buttes lookout, at 8,600 feet in the Lakes Basin area, is reached by a 2½-mile trail that is considered difficult.
